NORTH BERGEN, UNION CITY, AND WEST NEW YORK – West New York, North Bergen, and Union City are preparing for the onset of Hurricane Irene.
“We are in constant communication with the neighboring mayors, the county and the state,” said West New York Mayor Dr. Felix Roque on Thursday night. “We activated out reverse 911 in order to educate the community. This was just done in the English and Spanish language.”
Reverse 911 is a phone system that calls residents in case of an emergency and gives them information.
On Friday, Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack and the Board of Commissioners issued the following information regarding the upcoming storm:
“If conditions become unsafe and shelter is needed, residents have the option of reporting to two shelters: 1.) Jose Marti Freshman Academy (1800 Summit Avenue) 2.) Union City High School (2500 Kennedy Boulevard). Both storm shelters will open at 8 PM on Saturday, Aug. 27. Cots and basic amenities will be available. In case of emergency, the Union City Police Department may be contacted at (201) 865-1111.”
In North Bergen, officials met Friday. The town will establish two shelters, located at North Bergen High School at 7417 Kennedy Boulevard West and John F. Kennedy School at 1210 11th street.
The shelters will open Saturday at 6 p.m., and remain accessible for the duration of the storm. Both shelters will have generators, cots, food, and water. They will also be staffed by North Bergen police officers, Hudson County Sheriff’s officers, and school security personnel.
The North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue squad said that Weehawken High School at 53 Liberty Place will also serve as a shelter for North Hudson.
