A funeral mass was offered Sept. 1 at St. Aedan’s Church for Mary Russoniello, 102, formerly of 2600 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City. She died peacefully on Aug. 28 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. She was born in Sant’Andrea di Conza, Italy, to the late Pasquale and Josepina (Scolamiero) Russoniello. She immigrated to the U.S. at the age of four in 1913. Her family established an Italian bread bakery in downtown Jersey City that lasted for sixty years. She earned her teaching degree from New York University in Fine Arts and Education in 1938 at a time when women did not earn college degrees. Her entire forty-year career was spent in the art department at Snyder High School in Jersey City, retiring in 1978. She was a water colorist, oil painter and technical fashion designer whose artwork was exhibited in many different media and shows, including the Jersey City Museum. Her passion was yearly trans-atlantic voyages to Italy aboard the Queen Mary and the QE2, which she enjoyed for well over sixty years. She was a patron of the arts who supported the New York Metropolitan Opera and Symphony Orchestra at Lincoln Center throughout her life. She was predeceased by her five brothers, Andrew, Thomas, Sabin, Michael and John, and by her niece, Grace (Russoniello) Stango and her nephew, S. Gerard Russoniello. She is survived by her eighteen nieces and nephews and their families. Services arranged by the Riotto Funeral Home, Jersey City.
