HUMC to hold ribbon cutting on Dec. 1; NJ Lt. Gov. to attend

HOBOKEN –
In celebration of a new ownership group taking over Hoboken University Medical Center, Mayor Dawn Zimmer will host a ribbon cutting to officially (albeit symbolically) hand over the hospital from the city to HUMC Holdco, a private group from Bayonne Medical Center, on Dec. 1 at 3:30 p.m.
The ceremony will take place at the hospital’s Willow Avenue entrance, between 3rd and 4th streets.
Participants in the ceremony, in addition to Zimmer, will include Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno, Mary O’Dowd, the state commissioner of health, former Mayor David Roberts, who helped save the hospital from closure in 2008, Toni Tomarazzo, the chair of the municipal board that sold the hospital, and Philip Schaengold, the new Chief Executive Officer of HUMC.
The sale of the city, led by the Hoboken Municipal Hospital Authority and Zimmer, relieved the taxpayers of a $52 million bond guarantee, as the previous owners were ready to close the facility in 2008 due to financial problems.
