UNION CITY — “Just because the season will be over doesn’t mean we stop giving,” Union City High School Alternative Design Academy Student Council President Crystal Perez advised her 13 council classmates on Monday, Dec. 19. They spent the morning brainstorming ways to continue to give back to the community after having already raised $107 and purchased 47 gifts for local church St. Augustine’s toy drive for children in need.
Student and council member Diana Andrade came up with the idea, as a member of St. Augustine’s last Tuesday, and in a mere three days the crew organized a creative fundraiser dubbed “Dress Down Charity Day.” ADA faculty and students paid for the privilege of wearing casual attire to school. The student fee was $0.25, but most students gave up to $15 toward the collection, and faculty followed suit – or rather, jeans.
“It’s an incredible thing to see our students so eager to give back to the community,” ADA Social Worker and Student Council Advisor Eric Williams said. — Gennarose Pope
