Mama Johnson Field to have new look by mid-2012

Mama Johnson Field in southwest Hoboken will be resurfaced, and will receive a new drainage system, batting cages, and fences, thanks to a shared services agreement between the Hoboken Housing Authority and the city of Hoboken. The project is expected to be completed in the spring and summer months of 2012, according to a release from the HHA.
Mama Johnson Field is located at Fourth and Jackson streets next to the HHA’s administration building.
The city will contribute $600,000 to the project, and the HHA will cover the rest of the costs through Community Development Block Grants and municipal bonds. The amount contributed by the federally funded HHA was not listed in a release, and a spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.
“As the birthplace of baseball, it is only fitting that Hoboken has the most up-to-date and state-of-the-art equipment for our residents to use,” said Housing Authority Executive Director Carmelo Garcia in a release.
Although first priority is given to the HHA, the field is available to all Hoboken residents and is used by the ZogSports intramural league in the city, according to the release.
