Let the buyer beware!

(The following letter was published in the BCN in 1996, and still holds true today.)

To the Editor:
Too many times I have listened to Bayonne residents complain of contractors. Bayonne offers many top quality, independents if you take the time to look and follow some simple guidelines.
First, before meeting with your contractor, ask him to bring his license and insurance certificate. Accept no excuses! If you decide you want to use this contractor, give only a small binder before the contractor starts.
Do not issue the first payment or allow work to begin until you see your permit located in an area where it can be read from the front of your home!
Permits protect you and your family, neighbors, and the police and fire departments from catastrophic situations.
In closing, remember all legal businesses have operating costs. This is why a handyman is usually cheaper. However, you will pay in the long run.
