BAYONNE — Mayor Mark A. Smith and Assemblyman Jason O’Donnell announced that their offices will make telephones available for local Filipino-Americans to contact their relatives at home following the earthquake that struck the central Philippines on Feb. 6. The earthquake had a magnitude of 6.9 on the Richter scale, and caused mudslides in the country.
Smith said, “During this time of crisis in the Philippines, many residents have been concerned about the safety of their family members in that country. Some have had difficulty getting in touch with them. At both City Hall and the State Assembly office in Bayonne, we will make phones available to call the Philippines until further notice. Assemblyman O’Donnell and I want to help our Filipino-American residents stay in touch with their families until the situation improves.”
O’Donnell said, “I am eager to help my Filipino-American constituents at this stressful time. The recent earthquake has disrupted some communication lines. My office is happy to provide additional channels of communication to the Philippines.”
