Dear Editor:
I supported the idea of moving the St. Patrick’s Day parade to a week day, as Mayor Zimmer had suggested, and I don’t understand why that would’ve been a problem for the Parade Committee. The committee decided that scheduling it on a Wednesday afternoon would not work for them, so they decided to cancel it altogether. Whatever their reasoning was, I don’t believe that having the parade on a weekend day was possible any longer.
I have watched as the parade day has spiraled out of control year after year and am glad that action has finally been taken. While I understand that some people will be disappointed, I think it’s in the best interest of our city when we consider the cost of police support and cleanup in these tough economic times. Most importantly the p arade has become a problem for our community and puts people at risk for violence and vandalism.
