Rededication of Shetik Field came with tribute to Lagos

Mayor Michael Gonelli offered a moving tribute to the late Derek Lagos during the rededication ceremony for Shetik Field recently.
The newly refurbished field includes facilities for softball, Little League baseball, basketball, tennis and soccer, a sport at which Lagos excelled.
Lagos was a Secaucus teen who passed away in 2009.
“Derek was the epitome of a soccer player,” the mayor said. “He started playing soccer the day after he started walking. He played recreation soccer in Secaucus, and on many club teams throughout the area. Derek was all set to bring his talents onto the team at St. Peters Prep before his life ended too soon. There are many people here who can’t look at a soccer ball and not think of Derek. I’m sure he would have loved this new complex. Now, a new generation of soccer players will carry on the great tradition that those who came before them have started.”
Other officials on hand for the ceremony included Council members Susan Pirro and James Clancy, the former and current school athletic directors, and schools superintendent Cynthia Randina.
