Every year for the last 10 years, the Secaucus Rotary Club has presented a dictionary to each third grade student in the town’s two elementary schools.
This year, President Diane Rich, along with club secretary Dolly Kaur and membership chairman Rick Saltarelli, distributed the dictionaries to the students at the Huber Street School. Don Evanson and Phil Papa presented dictionaries at the Clarendon Street School. Don and Phil are current officers and former Secaucus Rotary Club presidents.
Approximately 170 dictionaries were given to thes students to keep for personal use.
After Diane and Dolly gave each class a talk on what the Rotary Club does, Rick played a game with each class by choosing words for them to spell, then find in their dictionary. Rick chose words associated with everyday school functions.
When he asked the students what word describes something their teacher gives them every day, but they probably don’t like, it was unanimous. Every student knew immediately: homework.
Another word Rick used was something he said was one of “his” favorite memories of third grade: recess.
The students were very happy to receive their new dictionaries and aid they liked that these were a lot lighter than the big, bulky ones they have in the classroom.
