Kid Witness News to be featured in Panasonic Olympic sponsorship video
Panasonic Corporation asked Weehawken’s student-run, televised news group, Kid Witness News, to create a promotional video to highlight Panasonic’s sponsorship of the 2012 Olympics.
Panasonic will use the student’s video as one of many national student videos in order to create an Olympic torch relay from Honolulu to Secaucus. With the help of teacher John Hammer, Kid Witness News filmed their portion earlier this month on Boulevard East with the New York City skyline as a backdrop.
The final production of all participating schools’ versions of the torch relay (including Weehawken’s) will be shown at the Panasonic Awards Dinner in May.
New North Hudson Regional Fire chief to be sworn in Monday
North Hudson Regional Fire Deputy Chief Frank Montaigne will be sworn in as the new chief of the department on Monday, March 26, at 10 a.m. at 11 Port Imperial Blvd. in West New York, North Hudson Regional Fire Director Jeff Welz said Wednesday.
Montaigne was first on the civil service list in line for chief after former Chief Brion McEldowney retired a year ago, Welz added. Montaigne has been serving as provisional chief ever since.
“Frank scored the highest among four other candidates, and received one of the highest scores in the state,” Welz said.
Seven firefighters will be promoted to the rank of captain on Monday as well, Welz added.
Weehawken Recreation to hold golf lessons
Weehawken Recreation will hold golf chipping and putting lessons at the Weehawken Waterfront Complex Putting Green on Monday, April 2 through Monday, April 23 for Weehawken residents ages 18 and up from 7 to 8 p.m.

Weehawken to sponsor 26th Annual Lincoln Tunnel Challenge
The Township of Weehawken will sponsor the home team for the 2012 Lincoln Tunnel Challenge on Sunday, April 29.
The event will raise money for the Special Olympics of New Jersey for the 26th year in a row. Last year, the home team had over 80 members.
Weehawken residents interested in participating and joining the Weehawken Home Team 2012 must register online at lincolntunnelchallenge.sonj.org under the team name of “Weehawken Home Team 2012.” The team members will walk or run five kilometers through the Lincoln Tunnel.
There is a $25.00 registration fee payable online before April 19. Residents may also make an online donation in the team’s name. The registration fee or donation goes directly to the Special Olympics of New Jersey.

N.Y. Giants Snow Bowl to benefit Special Olympics
The N.Y. Giants will team up with Special Olympics New Jersey to sponsor the sixth annual Snow Bowl Flag Football Tournament presented by Wyndham Worldwide on March 2 through 4 at MetLife Stadium.
The Snow Bowl, a six-on-six flag football tournament with light blocking, is played over three days and features recreational, competitive and co-ed divisions. Several of the registered teams will represent local police and fire departments. Each team was responsible for raising a minimum of $1,600 to play in the tournament, and many have gone above and beyond that.
Proceeds from Snow Bowl benefit Special Olympics New Jersey and help to support more than 22,000 children and adults with intellectual disabilities who train and compete, free-of-charge, year-round in 24 sports.

NJ Festival of Ballooning to hold statewide contest
PNC Bank and the Quick Chek N.J. Festival of Ballooning invite N.J. students in grades 2 through 12 to take part in the 9th annual PNC Bank American Patriot Essay Contest by writing a short essay on the topic “What the American Flag Means to Me.”
The largest summertime hot air balloon and music festival in North America will celebrate its 30th anniversary July 27 through 29 at Solberg Airport in Readington, NJ and will feature the PNC Bank American Flag balloon: the largest free-flying flag in the world.
This year’s Grand Prize winner will receive a visit to his or her school by a 75-foot-tall hot air balloon in June and a special VIP package at this year’s festival: a hot air balloon ride for two, four Blue Sky Club VIP tickets, and the opportunity to meet one of this year’s concert headliners, which have included the Jonas Brothers and Disney stars Demi Lovato and Emily Osment in the past.
Second and third place prizes will include festival admission and merchandise.
The winning student’s immediate classmates will each receive one complimentary general admission ticket to the festival and the winning student’s teacher and school principal will each receive two Blue Sky Club VIP tickets.
Every teacher in the state who submits a group of 15 essays or more on behalf of their students will receive two free general admission tickets to the festival regardless of whether one of their students submits the winning essay.
The essays should be 100 words or less. They will be judged by a panel of representatives from PNC Bank and the balloon festival. Winning essays will be selected based on creativity, poignancy and clarity with consideration given to the grade level of the contestant. Contestants are not required to be U.S. citizens.
Entries should include the student’s name, home or school address, home or school telephone number, grade, age, school name and the name of their teacher.
