Secaucus, Hoboken students in 2012 Shakespeare competition

Pooja Desai, a 12th grader at The Hudson School and a resident of Secaucus, was one of six finalists at the 2012 Shakespeare Competition held Saturday, March 3 in Monmouth County at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft.
Also representing The Hudson School was 12th grader Woodrow Proctor of Hoboken, performing Edmund’s speech from “King Lear” and William Shakespeare’s Sonnet 91.
Pooja’s performance as Caliban from “The Tempest” and of Sonnet 18 received recognition from the judges.
Students from high schools across New Jersey who have been chosen to represent their schools after winning in their own school competition compete in the state Shakespeare competition. The winner then advances to the national competition.
The Shakespeare Competition, in which each contestant recites a Shakespearean monologue and one of the playwright’s sonnets, is sponsored by the English Speaking Union of the United States, whose aim is to encourage students to develop their communication skills and an appreciation for the power of language and literature.
The Hudson School, a small, independent school for grades 5-12 accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, was founded in Hoboken in 1978 by Suellen Newman.
