Spectra pipeline hearing today focused on parkland lease

JERSEY CITY – Two hearings at Liberty State Park today will allow members of the public to speak out on Spectra Energy’s plan to lease nearly 1 acre of parkland for it’s proposed 15 mile natural gas pipeline.
The meetings take place at 3 and 6 p.m. at the Terminal Building at 1 Audrey Zapp Dr., according to published reports.
The Houston-based energy company plans to pay the state $862,000 over 20 years to use the land, as well as $66,000 for use of temporary work space and another $1.4 million to compensate for the environmental impact of the work.
Jersey City and Hoboken officials and a coalition of citizen groups have mounted opposition to the pipeline, saying it poses a safety hazard. The pipeline will supply natural gas to customers of Con Edison in New York and certain facilities in Bayonne.
