Arrest made for robbery at gas station
The Secaucus police department on May 7 arrested Edwardo Rodriguez, 23, from Belleville for allegedly robbing a Shell Service Station on Route 3 East on Dec. 26, 2012. According to the police report persons located at the business reported to police that a male allegedly entered the business wearing a ski mask and gloves while armed with a rifle. One person on the property was allegedly struck in the head with the rifle. The masked man allegedly fled the scene.
The incident had been under investigation from December until May 7. The police issued arrest warrants for Rodriguez for robbery while armed, four counts of aggravated assault, and two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm. The police recovered property but no firearm. Rodriguez was taken to an out of county correctional facility and awaited a bail hearing.
Bill Clinton backs Bill Pascrell over Steven Rothman
Former President Bill Clinton May 4 endorsed U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-Paterson) over U.S. Rep. Steven Rothman (D-Englewood) in what has been a close primary battle for the Ninth Congressional District.
Pascrell and Rothman went head to head after redistricting forced portions of Congressional Districts 5, 8, and 9 to combine into two districts. Secaucus and Kearny are the only Hudson County municipalities in the new Ninth Congressional District. The primary is June 5.
“I know Bill Pascrell, and he is the fighter we need to support President Obama,” President Clinton said in a press statement. “Bill helped write President Obama’s health care law, he’s a leader protecting and strengthening Social Security and Medicare, and he never stops fighting for the middle class. Nothing is more important to Bill than creating jobs in New Jersey. I saw that in the eight years we worked together to build unprecedented prosperity for America. We can’t afford to lose his ideas, energy, and experience just when they’re needed most.”
Last day to register to vote for upcoming primary election
The last day to register to vote for the upcoming primary election is May 15. The Secaucus Town Clerk’s office will be open until 9 p.m. for voter registration, or address changes on May 15. The primary is June 5.
Town named Tree City USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation
The Arbor Day Foundation named Secaucus a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry for the 19th time. The town earned the national distinction by meeting standards associated with promoting a healthy community and providing a vital habitat for wildlife. The Arbor Day Foundation is a nonprofit, environmental and education organization that inspires people to plant, nurture, and celebrate trees.
Town hosts health fair May 12
The Mayor and Town Council plan to host a Health Fair on May 12 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Secaucus Recreation Center. The Health Fair will feature medical information, and cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes screenings. Proceeds from a plant sale will go to the Secaucus Emergency Fund, a nonprofit that was established to provide financial help to those in need.
Hudson Chamber partners with United Way in benefit event May 14
The Hudson County Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Hudson County are joining efforts to present “We Are Hudson – The Live Benefit” on May 14, at the Roxiticus Golf Club in Mendham beginning at 10 a.m. Two leaders, who have embodied the spirit of the Mary T. Norton, New Jersey’s first Congresswoman, will be honored: Joanne Bruno, vice president for Academic Affairs at New Jersey City University and Jean Quinn, vice president of Public Relations at The Provident Bank. Both honorees will be recognized for making outstanding contributions to the success of United Way programs in Hudson County. Founded in 1888, the Chamber currently represents more than 340 members, facilitates forums with local, state and federal officials, and provides a platform for business networking and partnerships. In its 76th year of service, the United Way mobilizes resources to affect positive, long-term change in the lives of homeless and impoverished men, women and children in Hudson County. Proceeds from the benefit event will support both organizations, and will include a day of golf and tennis. Registration begins at 10 a.m. The Mary T. Newark Museum offers ‘Tibet and Its Treasures’ and free museum passes at the library
The Newark Museum Speakers Bureau will host a program on “Tibet and Its Treasures” at the Secaucus Public Library and Business Resource Center on May 20 at 2 p.m. All those attending the program will receive a free pass to the Newark Museum, which offers 80 galleries of inspiration and exploration. Alzheimer’s Association hosts workshop at the library
The Greater New Jersey Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association will host the third program in its three-part series at 7 p.m. on May 21 at the Secaucus Public Library. Library Mini-Fair seeks vendors and volunteers
The Friends of the Secaucus Public Library seeks vendors and volunteers to sign-up to participate in the 15th annual Mini-Fair/Used Book Sale scheduled for September 22.
The event will take place on the library grounds from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain date is September 23. Friends’ president Zinnia Miller urges vendors to secure their spaces early. She also notes that volunteers are always needed for an event this size and urges residents to contact Library Director Jenifer May to see how they can get involved. Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month Bird Walk with the NJMC and BCAS
