Assemblyman Mainor to hold youth development forum Saturday

JERSEY CITY – On Saturday, June 2 state Assemblyman Charles Mainor (Jersey City-31st Dist.) and Creative Minds Development will co-sponsor a sports-based youth development forum at Jersey City’s Frank R. Conwell School (PS No. 3) at 111 Bright St. The forum will begin at 10 a.m.
The forum will focus on how participation in athletics and healthy play can help kids develop off the field.
Assemblyman Mainor is inviting members of the community to participate in the forum to ask questions and learn more about how residents can work together to build a brighter and stronger future for youth. Discussion at the forum will address two key areas: First, how both local and national organizations use sports and healthy play as a positive change agent for youth development; and second, what it means to be a competitive student athlete.
A panel of invited speakers will help facilitate the discussion. Panelists will include national and local nonprofit leaders, Olympic committee members, former student athletes, nationally acclaimed coaches, and Franklin Walker, interim superintendent for the Jersey City Public Schools.
As part of the day’s discussion participants will talk about how the student athlete experience has positively shaped the lives of the panelists and what it takes to become a successful student athlete before, during, and after college. The organizers hope the forum will shed light on how participation in sports activities can transform the lives of all youth, as well as discuss what it takes to be a competitive student athlete both on and off the court or field of play.
The hope is that forum participants will walk away with new and fresh ideas on what to expect before, during, and after their career as a student athlete and how government entities such as the City Recreation Department, the Board of Education, the State of New Jersey and others can collaborate to build on their success now and in the future.
