Union City mayor to join caregivers on picket line Wednesday

UNION CITY AND BEYOND – Union City Mayor and state Senator Brian Stack will be joining caregivers on the picket line at Manhattanview Health Care Center to protest the loss of health benefits crucial for keeping caregivers and those they care for healthy and safe on Wednesday afternoon.
Picketers will gather in Union City (Manhattanview Health Care Center at 3200 Hudson Ave.), Perth Amboy (Amboy Care Center at 1 Lindbergh Ave.), and Teaneck (Teaneck Nursing Center at 1104 Teaneck Rd.) on Wednesday, May 30 between 2 and 5 p.m.
The caregivers are members of the largest long-term care union in the state, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East (UHWE).
The three nursing homes are managed by Broadway Healthcare Management in Hackensack and are currently in contract negotiations with their employees. Management has denied an increase in contributions to the employee health fund needed to maintain current benefits.
The pickets are designed to inform New Jersey residents and public officials about the need for sensible labor contracts in New Jersey’s nursing facilities that ensure healthy workplaces for caregivers and quality resident care for our state’s most frail and vulnerable residents. Workers are fighting to maintain their existing healthcare benefits and to secure minimal wage increases that keep pace with the increased cost of living in the state.
