Mayor Zimmer calls for special meeting of the council; will discuss flooding

HOBOKEN — Mayor Dawn Zimmer has called for a special meeting of the City Council Monday, June 25 at 7 p.m. to discuss various items, including the possible awarding of a $122,000 maintenance contract to Emnet to address flooding issues in the west side of town. The resolution had been pulled from this past Wednesday’s council meeting.
Last year, the city hired EmNet to install 15 sensors to detect flooding events and gather data in real time. The sensors are installed underneath manholes, and can detect when water is rising in the area in order to determine the flow of the water throughout the city.
The new contract seeks to extend the system to implement more sensors.
“In order to collect the most useful data possible, it is important that we move ahead with this project before the rain season arrives,” said Zimmer in a memo to the council dated June 18.
Zimmer said in her memo that the city will eventually use the data to help inform a “professional engineering/green infrastructure team,” which will be hired in the future and will work to develop a comprehensive — and green — storm water management plan.
The council will also meet in a closed session during the meeting to discuss Sinatra Field and Castle Point Park, possibly in reference to an ongoing effort to restore the parks. In February, the council authorized $7.7 million contract that hoped to allow youth soccer to be played along the waterfront by fall.
