Beat the heat! Jersey City announces cooling centers

HUDSON COUNTY – Several local municipalities, including Jersey City, have announced cooling stations that will be open during the heat wave this week. All residents, especially the elderly, disabled people, pregnant women, and young children are encouraged to stay indoors or take advantage of municipal cooling centers, if necessary.
Also, try to remain indoors (preferably in an air conditioned space) as much as possible; wear lightweight, light colored and loose fitting clothing; keep hydrated by consuming plenty of water and natural juices and avoid beverages with alcohol and caffeine which increase dehydration; eat light meals; refrain from strenuous activities; and recognize the symptoms of heat disorders.
Residents are urged to check on elderly neighbors and those with disabilities. Apply sunscreen with a high SPF content to small children to avoid overexposure to the sun. Never leave children or pets in closed vehicles, where temperatures can exceed 190 degrees in less than ten minutes, and provide shade and cool water to pets.
