QUIGLEY, JOHN J.

A funeral mass was offered June 12 at St. Aloysius Church, Jersey City, for John J. (Jack) Quigley, Jr., 80. He passed away June 6 at his home in Jersey City. He was born in Brooklyn and has lived in Jersey City since his early childhood. He had a lifelong involvement in the Boy Scouts of America and in various community groups in Jersey City. Jack graduated from Lincoln High School and St. Peter’s College in Jersey City and earned both city and county fencing championships while in school. He obtained his legal doctorate from Fordham Law School.
After serving his country in the U.S. Army Quartermaster Corps, he specialized in Maritime Law, a career decision made when his first job after military service involved the collision of the Stockholm with the Andrea Dorea. He was admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court. Jack’s involvement in the Boy Scouts of America began at age eight, and he had been involved in scouting ever since. He held almost every assignment and title in local and regional scouting. He served on the Council Executive Board as Commissioner, Vice President and President of the Hudson Hamilton Council. He earned the Silver Beaver and Silver Antelope and was a Vigil Member of the Order of the Arrow. He organized and operated dining facilities at the quadrennial International Scouting Jamborees seven times and taught at Wood Badge courses and Camp Schools for eighteen years. He was Cubmaster of Pack 516 and Scoutmaster of Troop 16 of St. Aloysius Parish. He was also a Committee Member of Troop 22 of Bloomfield.
Among the civic and community organizations Jack chaired were the Save Our Boulevard Committee, the Citizens Committee of Hudson County, the Pop Warner Football Association and the President Lincoln Association of Hudson County. Jack was a member of the Jersey City Rotary Club, where he served as president, as a perennial toastmaster, and most recently as Sergeant at Arms.
He was a member of St. Aloysius Parish and has served as a Eucharistic Minister there. At the time of his passing, he was also serving as a Selective Services Commissioner. A talented amateur artist, Jack has taught arts and crafts to adult groups. After retiring from his law career, he completed the Certificate Course at the Culinary Institute of Hudson County Community College. Jack is survived by his wife Joan; sons John James, III and Robert Duane (Loretta), daughter Suzanne (Stanley Rogacki); brother, William D. Quigley; five grandchildren, John James IV, Brian Matthew and Daniel Patrick Quigley, Alexander Adam Rogacki and Katherine Mary Quigley.
