Dear Editor:
Guarding lives is serious life or death business and on-duty lifeguards should not have cell phones and music units. I saw this on at least 4 different days when I was at the local pool. Every summer there are sad stories about drowning.
The guards are nice young kids, but full of excuses and lies, i.e. “I need it for emergencies,” “I’m talking to my boss” and other creative “stories”!! I spoke to most of them and observed them reading texts and writing texts and talking to friends – no “bosses” no emergencies” etc. This is dead serious, not to mention the liability to all of us.
It has got to stop immediately. It is not negotiable.
Life guards on duty do not have cell phones!!
Wake up people and stop the nonsense and excuses. Harvey Acosta, told me “I agree with you 100 percent, but that’s how kids are today.” Harvey, fire them and get new ones who are told up front no cell phones while on duty.
Let’s stop the bull – and let’s do it now.
Don’t wait another minute.
Thanks,
Len Alpert
