Upcoming City Council meeting could authorize bond for waterfront

The City Council will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. to vote on a bond ordinance intended to jump start the redesign of Hoboken’s landmark streets, including Washington Street and Sinatra Drive. The upgrades would include the goal of making the streets more pedestrian-friendly.
The bond ordinance was introduced last month in a 6-3 vote. Five votes were cast by members typically aligned with the Zimmer administration, plus Councilwoman Beth Mason, who is often opposed to the administration.
Roughly $800,000 of the bond would be used for the design and engineering costs for Washington Street. Approximately $100,000 will be allocated to the design and improvements to Sinatra Drive. The remaining $130,000 will be used for improvements on Observer Highway and Newark Street.
The ordinance has been supported by advocacy group Fund For a Better Waterfront.
Councilman Tim Occhipinti, a member of the minority, said last month that he disagrees with the funding process, adding that he feels it should have been a budgeted item.
