Fredman-Grover Post 76 donates books

Fredman-Grover Post 76, Jewish War Veterans of America, has donated 10 books to the North Bergen Library in memory of late author Dan Kurzman, a Post 76 member and North Bergen resident.
Kurzman was a former foreign correspondent for the Washington Post and author of 17 books. His last books, “No Greater Glory” and “A Special Mission” were written in North Bergen.
“Dan’s background as a reporter and foreign correspondent from almost every country in Europe, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America served him well, since all the books focused on military or political history,” said veterans’ group member David Kronick.

‘Party in Pink’

Our Lady of Fatima Church will hold a “Party in Pink Movin’ to end Breast Cancer” Zumba Fitness event on Sunday, Sept. 23 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Donations are $20 per person and $5 for children under 12 with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. There will be a live DJ, raffles and door prizes. Registration begins at 3 p.m.

New restaurant/dessert shop on Broadway

MPS Café, 7418 Broadway, celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon cutting on Friday, Sept. 14. MPS, which serves Dominican cuisine, stands for Mom’s Pop Shop, and originally began by serving cake pops along with chocolate lollipops.
“We just want to give back to our community,” said North Bergen High School graduate Kenefy Perez.
A soft opening began the week after Labor Day weekend to get feedback from the community and test the waters. The restaurant also has free Wi-Fi.

New Jersey Meadowlands Commission announces upcoming events

Join a wildlife adventure combining art and science on Sunday, Sept. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. called “Bugs and Beasts: Drawing Safari for Kids.” Young explorers will learn to draw animals like a scientist, go on a mini-safari, find animals to study and draw them. Take-home supplies will be included after the adventure has ended. Admission is $10 per child and $8 for MEC members. It is open to ages 8 to 12 that must be accompanied by an adult. The event is at the Meadowlands Environment Center at Two DeKorte Park Plaza in Lyndhurst.

For a fishing excursion, go seining, fishing with nets, along with the MEC staff and meet some marsh animals up-close and personal. Library events announced

Poets, writers and the community are welcome to join “Literature Lives,” a monthly reading series, as well as Open Mic on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 8 p.m. The featured readers will be Reggie Walker, Jenevieve Cruz and David Messineo.

If you want to build skills personally and professionally, on Thursday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. there will be a Master Speaker event on how to expand your vocabulary and master the top ten keys to effective communication.

Hudson County Baseball Umpires Association will hold cadet classes for anyone interested in becoming a certified high school baseball and/or softball umpire. Classes start Monday, Jan. 7 through March in Jersey City.
