DAVIS, BETTY

Funeral services took place Oct. 12 at St. John’s Baptist Church, Jersey City, for Betty Davis. She passed away Oct. 4 at Jersey City Medical Center after a prolonged illness. She accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church in Shelby, N.C. under the leadership of Reverend Albert Ponder. Betty attended elementary school in Shelby. Later, she relocated to New Jersey. She was employed as a live in housekeeper in Englewood. She graduated from Dickinson High School and attended Jersey City College. Later she was employed as a seamstress.
Betty was also a foster parent to a host of children for the Division of Youth and Family Services. She always loved working with children. She was later employed as a security guard for the Jersey City Public Schools at PS 12 until her retirement. Betty was united in holy matrimony to Oteria Davis, Jr. and to this union, one daughter, Stephanie was born. Betty was an active member of the St. John’s Baptist Church for over 40 years. She was a member of the Pastors Aide Committee, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School Staff and the President of the Floral Circle for many years. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her daughter, Stephanie Davis; three granddaughters, Raven, Lapresha and Ya’Neeka; one grandson, Anthony; one sister, Geraldine Accor of Jersey City; one brother, James Billy Whitworth of Wellington, Fla.; two sisters in law, Carolyn Louise Harris of Raleigh, N.C. and Shirley Clark of Edison; one brother in law, John Gullatte, Sr. of Shelby, N.C.; many nieces and nephews: Louise Gullatte, Miranda Accor, both of Jersey City, John Gullatte, Jr., Edward Lee Gullatte, Anthony Accor, all of Shelby, N.C. and a host of other nieces and nephews, great nieces, great nephews, foster children, other relatives and friends. Services arranged by the Jackson Funeral Residence, Jersey City.
