Dear Editor:
The Mama Johnson Field is open! The residents of the Hoboken Housing Authority and the City of Hoboken can now enjoy a state-of-the-art multi-purpose field. This field is going to be the home of PAL Grunts Football, the Girls’ Softball Program, Instructional Soccer, Lacrosse Clinics, Minor League baseball, HHA events, Open Play, Zogs Sports and ABL.
Not only will organized sports be played on this field, but there will be time a father and son can enjoy catching the ball or having batting practice in the new cages. This field is seen as a gem in the city, a place where families can enjoy their kids simply recreating with others.
Mama Johnson cared deeply about the children of our community. She cared that they were playing and not getting into trouble. We are taking her mission one step further. We are breaking down a barrier, introducing the residents of the housing authority to the greater Hoboken community and bringing the greater Hoboken community to the housing authority.
I am grateful for an amazing ribbon cutting ceremony that was celebrated by all young and old in attendance. This all would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez and Congressman Albio Sires, who spoke about their fight and their optimism to keep HUD funds coming to New Jersey. We appreciate Mayor Dawn Zimmer, the City Council, 4th Ward Councilman Occhipinti, and Director Leo Pelligrini who collaborated with us to secure these funds. We are also thankful to County Executive Tom Degise and the Board of Freeholders, Anthony Romano, Chair pro-temp. My supportive Board of Commissioners who had approved the use of capital funds which was necessary to allow me to make the impossible, possible so a special declaration to them.
We are one step closer to making our five-year plan a reality. I am excited about the possibilities for the future of the housing authority like our Splash and Spray Park scheduled for the spring of 2013 and vision 2020 a transformation and long term sustainable plan. We rejoiced by also celebrating Housing America Month with a successful resident appreciation festival. With the completion of the Mama Johnson Field, I know our dreams for the housing authority’s equality and greatness will come true. Iam4Purpose, progress, potential and prosperity.
