A musical for the season
Few musicals so capture the spirit of the Jewish holiday season as “Fiddler on the Roof” does. It is a production that will also help the recently established Perkel Youth Theater Company grow beyond the typical Disney-like productions it offers.
The musical, set in Tsarist Russia near the turn of the 20th century, deals with many themes relevant to all changing societies, such as blind trust, old traditions, and the illusionary progress of more modern ideas.
Directed by Erin Van Horn, the show will be put on at 7 p.m. on Dec. 8 and at 12 p.m. on Dec. 9 at the Jewish Community Center. The cast of 12 includes kids from throughout Hudson County.

$1 million Powerball ticket sold in Bayonne
A ticket worth $1 million from the Nov. 29 Powerball lottery drawing was sold at the Corner Store on Broadway, one of several million dollar winners sold in Hudson County.
The two tickets for grand prize, however, $588 million prize, were sold in Arizona and Missouri.
Toy drive for needy kids
Hudson County Freeholder Bill O’Dea and members of the South Hudson Civic Association have requested donations for the annual community party and toy distribution event. This event will take place on Dec. 21at 6 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, located at 60 Westside Avenue.
A hot and cold buffet, music and other entertainment will be provided. Toys will be gathered from donors and placed for distribution on Dec. 22 at 10 a.m.
“The generous support our donors provide the residents of District 2 is beyond what we could expect,” O’Dea said. “Their past generosity has always made this event successful. So once again we ask for donations, be they monetary or toy donations to enable our organization to provide a smile to children this holiday season.”

HCCC gala slated for Dec. 6
Hudson County Community College Foundation will hold the 15th annual Holiday Gala at 6 p.m. on Dec. 6 at the HCCC Culinary Arts Institute/Conference Center, located at 161 Newkirk Street in Jersey City. Proceeds from the event are dedicated to scholarships for deserving students, faculty development programs, and the college’s physical expansion.
HCCC Vice President for Development Joseph Sansone said that PSE&G will be the recipient of this year’s Distinguished Service Award, which recognizes organizations and individuals for their work on behalf of the college and the people of Hudson County.
“PSE&G has been a partner to the college for some time, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to thank them on behalf of the College and our students,” Sansone stated.
The gala will include a hospitality hour, during which area restaurants will prepare and serve hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. The restaurants participating this year are Boca Grande, Edward’s Steakhouse, Encore Catering, Havana Dulce, La Isla, Liberty House, Lisbon, Michael Anthony’s, PJ Ryan’s, Rita & Joe’s, Renato’s Pizza Masters, Rumba Cubana, and Tejo.
The event also features a gourmet dinner feast prepared by the chef-instructors from the college’s nationally acclaimed Culinary Arts Institute and served by students.
During the gala, the winning ticket of the annual “Lucky Odds” raffle will be drawn. The grand prize winner will receive 40 percent of the raffle ticket sales. The second prize winner will be awarded six percent, and the third prize winner will be presented with four percent. Tickets are $50 each. Ticket holders need not be present to win.
