SECAUCUS BRIEFS

Car found in Secaucus pool; driver from North Bergen

The driver of the blue Cadillac sedan that was found floating in the Secaucus Swimming Pool Wednesday morning was identified as 26-year-old Joshua Goyes from North Bergen, according to Sgt. Detective Thomas O’Keeffe.
Goyes turned himself in around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night and was later released that evening after posting bail. Police responded to a call at 7:36 a.m. about a vehicle submerged in the town pool, according to O’Keeffe. A dive team was called in to search the pool. A crew was also called in to remove the blue 2005 Cadillac CTS from the pool.
Goyes was charged with reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and possession of drug paraphernalia because police removed a suspected marijuana roach from the vehicle, according to the police.
O’Keeffe said he could not disclose any details on whether Goyes was the same individual who refused medical treatment by the EMS around 3 a.m. Wednesday morning after the individual was found walking along Route 3 East by the Sunoco station in soaked clothing.
O’Keeffe said the police are working on determining the details related to how the car ended up in the pool. Goyes was also wanted by Secaucus Police for a local town ordinance violation in the amount of $94 according to the police. He is due to appear in Secaucus Municipal Court on Dec. 5 at 5:30 p.m.

More than a hundred protesters assemble outside of Walmart on Black Friday

As customers streamed in on Black Friday for early holiday shopping, a coalition of workers’ rights groups assembled to protest low wages, irregular schedules, and the treatment of workers at Walmart in Secaucus. The demonstration was part of a national movement in solidarity with 1,000 strikes taking place at Walmart stores across the country. The crowd was mixed with New Yorkers, Hudson and Bergen County residents.
Protesters held signs that read “Stop union busting at Walmart” and chanted statements such as, “Bad for the workers, bad for the town – Walmart pushes wages down,” while drums played in the background. The group chanted in front of the store before parading through the parking lot pushing shopping carts and ended up at the main street entrance to the store.
Secaucus police officers and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office kept the protestors from blocking the main entrance to the store so that customers could continue to shop. Some customers joined in chanting as they walked by.
