Home for the holidays

A survey of decorations around Jersey City

It takes a special breed of person to stand on a roof for two or three hours on the coldest days of the year with a hammer and some nails just to hang some pretty lights. We – the proverbial “we” – admit that we aren’t among that special breed. But we do enjoy and appreciate the work of our neighbors who are!
What Scrooge doesn’t smile at the sight of an inflatable Grinch or one of those giant snow globes with the penguins inside? Probably the ones who live in those “planned communities” where such displays are banned. Since Jersey City is a lot more free-wheeling than those staid developments, holiday decorations abound. (Last year, residents here won a three-way competition with the cities of Roselle and Newark in what was called the Home Decoration Smackdown. According to one of the three sponsors of the competition, Jersey City didn’t just win, “we crushed them.”)
Anyway, here’s a look at what some of the neighbors have done in honor of the holidays this year.
