A funeral mass was offered Jan. 5 at St. Peter and Paul R.C. Church, Hoboken for Maria Ester Vinas, 95, of Hoboken. She passed away Jan. 1 at Christ Hospital in Jersey City. Born in Lugo, Spain, Maria migrated to Havana Cuba with her parents at the age of eight, finally settling in Hoboken in 1974. While living in Cuba, Mrs. Vinas worked as a teacher and owner of the La Milagrosa Grammar School for some 15 years. After settling in Hoboken, Maria worked as a social worker for the City of Hoboken Senior Citizen Program at H.O.P.E. Inc., retiring at the age of 85. Maria was predeceased by her husband Narciso Vinas in 2009. She was also predeceased by her parents Antonio and Consuelo Diaz, and two brothers Hipolito and Oscar Diaz. Surviving is a daughter Reina C. Vinas; and two sisters in law Elvira and Rosalia Diaz. She will be missed by her nieces and nephews Lourdes, Oscar, Diana, Mary Ellen, Hipolito, Olga, Robert and Raul. Services arranged by the Failla Memorial Home, Hoboken.
