WHITAKER, DOROTHY E.

A funeral service was held Jan. 31 for Dorothy E. ‘Dot’ Whitaker, 84, of Brick. She died Jan. 26 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick. She was born and raised in Union City with her four sisters, ‘The Bailey Girls,’ where she attended Union Hill High School. In her early years she was employed by Sacson Inc. Dress Company in Union City before becoming a homemaker and raising her four children. In her later years, Dot nurtured and enjoyed participating in the upbringing of her grandchildren.
Dot lived in Weehawken for many years before moving to Brick in 1971. An avid sports fan, she always supported and cheered on her sons, daughters and grandsons in their athletic endeavors. Dot really enjoyed family gatherings, listening to music and watching her TV favorites. An animal lover, she enjoyed walking and spending time with her many canine friends and was a longtime supporter of the Jersey Shore Animal Center in Brick.
She was a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was predeceased by her spouse of 61 years, Asa ‘Big A’ Whitaker in 2011 and her daughter in law JoAnne Zayanskosky Whitaker in 2009. She is survived by two sons, Asa J. of Lebanon, and Keith F. and his companion, Sharon Amantia of Hamilton; two daughters, Lynn E. Casey and her husband, Kevin of Millsboro, Del., and Eileen M. Garcia and her husband, Mauricio of Brick; three grandchildren, Andrew, Asa Z. and Garrett; a great grandson, Jason; and several nieces and nephews. Services arranged by the Colonial Funeral Home, Brick.
