Hoboken gets grant for soccer field at 16th Street
HOBOKEN – The U.S. Soccer Foundation announced Monday that the city of Hoboken is a recipient of a 2013 Safe Places to Play Grant. According to a press statement released Monday, the city applied for the funding to pay for the turf field to be built as part of Phase 1 of construction at 1600 Park & Hoboken Cove. The $200,000 grant is one of 48 grants totaling $2.4 million announced Monday by the U.S. Soccer Foundation.
Also according to the press release: Construction recently began on Phase 1 of 1600 Park & Hoboken Cove. Phase 1 will include a multi-use field, lighting, bleachers and leaning rails, a dog run, restrooms, bike racks, and a slide hill and viewing mound. “With a booming population as more families choose to stay here for the long term, our community needs more open space for recreation than ever before,” said Mayor Dawn Zimmer. “We are so thankful to the U.S. Soccer Foundation for their generous support in building what will be a great field for our entire community to enjoy.”
“The U.S. Soccer Foundation is thrilled to support the City of Hoboken’s efforts to provide a safe place for children to play soccer,” said Krista Washington, marketing and communications coordinator at the U.S. Soccer Foundation. “We believe every child should have the opportunity to play the game in a safe environment that encourages positive social and physical development and we are excited to see the impact a new field will have on the youth of Hoboken!”
All-star lineup for Catholic Schools Week
HUDSON COUNTY — Hudson Catholic planned to welcome former NY Giants player Cecil Lee Rouson to its National Catholic Schools Week assembly on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at 8:30 a.m. Hudson County Freeholder and Hudson Catholic Consultative Board member Bill O’Dea was expected to deliver a Freeholder Proclamation, and Dr. Joel Nunez, clinical psychologist and elder at Cityline Church in Jersey City, planned a talk on “Reaching Goals While Not Forgetting Faith.”
Cecil Lee Rouson, who spent seven seasons in the NFL with the Giants and the Cleveland Browns, works as a motivational speaker for Sports World Ministries, travelling to schools and churches around the United States. He is also associate pastor at New Horizon Community Church and has served as northern New Jersey director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
In addition to guest speakers Cecil Lee Rouson and Dr. Joel Nunez, Hudson Catholic alumnus and parent Mr. Emilio Ramos, 19 year member of the J.C.P.D., was to present the school with its official mascot. Mr. Ramos currently serves as a member of the elite Emergency Services Unit of the J.C.P.D. and was a Bomb Tech instructor, as well. Associate Principal Dr. Herrera commented, “We are appreciative of the continued support as Hudson Catholic continues to stay true to its mission of encouraging individual development and responsibility to the community.”
“We are excited to have this diverse group of people joining us as we celebrate National Catholic Schools Week,” said President/Principal Mr. Richard Garibell. “It will be a valuable experience for our students to hear the messages of faith in action from our guest speakers.”
