To the Editor:
Nearly a lifetime member, Ralph Terracciano passed away on Jan. 7, 2013. This was listed in a local newspaper on Jan. 9. His viewing was on Jan. 10. He had spent countless years at American Legion Post 19 donating his time and effort to keep the Post at its peak operating standard. He was always there when needed.
Service! That’s what the American Legion is all about, at least according to Commander Tom Buchanan, as quoted in the Bayonne Community News on Jan. 16. Shame on you people for not hanging the Post flag at half-mast; not having anyone from Post 19 show up at his viewing; and not having a presentation of the Post colors or having anyone participate in the reading of his farewell.
So who did come? Fifteen veterans from the Catholic War Vets, 30 friends from the Knights of Columbus, and two U.S. Navy sailors to play “Taps” and present a flag to his family. From Post 19, zero showed. Shame on this veterans’ organization.
