Come see what your school board has planned

Dear Editor:
As the newly-appointed board president, and on behalf of the entire Hoboken School Board – a board that is committed to its responsibility to set goals that will continue to improve the quality of the Hoboken Public School District’s educational system – I encourage the Hoboken community to attend board meetings and learn more about the work we will be undertaking.
Fortunately, we have a lot to build upon. Thanks to our superintendent Dr. Mark Toback, his staff, and our administrators and teachers, progress is being made in a number of areas. These include increased financial accountability, new curricula, new text books, increased tutoring, new science laboratories, a longer school day, implementation of advanced placement courses, additional special education programs and exciting new programs to increase parental involvement, such as the parent portal that will enable parents to view their children’s daily progress on-line.
Still, there is room for progress and much will be proposed in 2013. I ask the school community, parents, and the greater Hoboken community, to listen carefully to the issues, stay open to new ideas, and work with the Board in support of our efforts to increase student achievement.
I am grateful for the opportunity to serve as board president and look forward to a year of challenges and success.

Sincerely,
Leon S. Gold, Ph.D.
President, Hoboken Board of Education
