With the playoffs just around the corner, the Bears (5-3-1) and the Jets (1-8) had set their sights on gearing up for the Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Indoor Flag Football Junior Division championship tournament. The Bears’ defense got the action started as the “maul machine,” led by Matt Miceli, Ryan Griffin, Victor Mendolaro and Alejandro Cifuentes pounced on the Jets’ running back for a safety. Two plays later, the Bears’ offense got on the scoreboard as Drew Radil rumbled in from 15 yards out, while Matt Miceli made it 10-0 with a two-point scamper.
Once the Jets’ offense settled down, they moved the ball well as Brian Pipher, Adam Brash, and Thomas Canela surged the ball up-court, but the Bears’ defense made key stops to protect the endzone. Up by 10, the Bears’ Matt Miceli electrified the crowd with a wire-to-wire TD sprint and a diving two-point grab to make it 18-0. For the Jets, their offensive redzone drought continued as great runs by Josh Belber and Kyle Arano resulted in lots of yards but no points. While the Jets struggled, the Bears continued to roll as Ryan Griffin reeled in a 15-yard TD toss, making it 24-0, Bears.
The Bears’ defense also continued to dominate as the “maul machine” forced its eighth safety of the season to extend the Bears’ advantage to 26-0. With the game well in hand, the Bears’ Drew Radil turned a clock-killing dive play into a 20-yard TD run. When Radil dove to cradle in the two-point connection, the Bears secured an impressive 34-0 victory.
