Super Bowl 2014 events announced
Several events taking place during the 2014 Super Bowl, which is being held on Feb. 2 at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, were announced Jan. 24 by Gov. Chris Christie.
According to the governor’s office, the NFL’s Tailgate Party, which takes place hours before the game, will take place at the Grandstand at the Meadowlands Racetrack. Reporters will be able to interview players from both teams during Media Day, which will be held at the Prudential Center in Newark on Jan. 28, 2014. Both teams will stay in New Jersey hotels and practice in the state.
The NY/NJ Super Bowl Host Committee’s pre-game party will be held in New Jersey. Postgame parties for both participating teams will also be held within the state at venues to be announced.
An estimated 150,000 out-of-town visitors are expected in the area during Super Bowl 2014. MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford holds 82,500 people.
Secaucus mayor receives award from North Bergen
North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the North Bergen Board of Commissioners unanimously voted during a regular meeting held on Jan. 23 to present Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli with an official proclamation thanking him for his efforts in assisting the township during Hurricane Sandy. Accompanied by Councilwoman Susan Pirro, Gonnelli attended the meeting to accept the honor and the township’s thanks.
“When a disaster like Hurricane Sandy hits, you truly learn who you can count on and we were lucky to have a neighbor like Secaucus Mayor Michael Gonnelli,” said Sacco, who also serves as a state senator representing the 32nd District, which includes both North Bergen and Secaucus.
“Mayor Gonnelli provided us with support in the form of sorely-needed generators to power some of our vital infrastructure and food and clothing donations for residents struggling with power outages. It was an enormous help and I would like to once again thank him very much.”
“Senator Sacco is always there whenever Secaucus has a concern and he is the first person I call whenever we have any issue or need assistance,” said Gonnelli. “It was a pleasure to be able to reciprocate and help North Bergen during its hour of need as it dealt with the effects of Sandy. I would like to thank Senator Sacco and the Board of Commissioners for this honor.”
Comedy Knight for Autism
Secaucus Knights of Columbus Mary Immaculate Council 12769 present Comedy Knight for Autism on Feb. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Church Auditorium. Hudson County Chamber of Commerce to welcome first female chair at annual meeting
The Hudson County Chamber of Commerce will celebrate Hudson County’s growth and development over the past few years next week at its Annual Business Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 7. In addition to kicking off the year-long celebration of the Chamber’s 125th anniversary, the meeting will also be marked by the inauguration of Daryl Harrison-Rand as the group’s newest chair. Rand, the Chamber’s first female chair ever, is the president of HarrisonRand Advertising.
“As a third-generation advertising agency in Hudson County since 1941 and a woman born into a family that has been in the area since the 1890s, it is truly an honor to be elected,” said Harrison-Rand. “I am thrilled to see so much growth, optimism and camaraderie here. It is our time and the Chamber is dedicated to making it happen.”
The meeting, which will be held at Puccini’s Restaurant in Jersey City, will be attended by more than 150 local entrepreneurs. Members of the Chamber will elect its Board of Directors during the proceedings.
In addition to featuring exhibits by more than a dozen local businesses, Robert Cotter, Planning Director of Jersey City, will be the event’s key-note speaker as he discusses the rise of “Wall St. West.” The exhibit will showcase the rise of Jersey City’s development over the past few years.

FEMA extends deadline to register for Hurricane Sandy assistance
Survivors of Hurricane Sandy now have until March 1, 2013, to register for disaster assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. People with storm losses in all counties in New Jersey can register online at www.DisasterAssistance.gov or via smartphone or tablet at m.fema.gov. Registration is also available by calling (800) 621-3362, TTY (800) 462-7585 or 711/VRS. The toll-free telephone numbers operate from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. seven days a week. The deadline was extended one month at the request of the state of New Jersey.
Through Wednesday, Jan. 23, more than 57,500 storm survivors have been approved for help through FEMA’s Individual Assistance program in New Jersey. The disaster registration process serves as a referral point for FEMA programs and those of partner agencies such as the U.S. Small Business Administration, American Red Cross and the Salvation Army. FEMA disaster assistance for individuals and families can include money for rental assistance, essential home repairs, personal property and other serious disaster-related needs not covered by insurance. The SBA has also set March 1 as the date for homeowners, renters and business owners to complete and return SBA disaster loan applications. Hospital announces new orthopedic surgery residency program
Meadowlands Hospital Medical Center (MHMC) announced last week in a press statement the accreditation of its new Orthopedic Surgery Residency Program, the hospital’s first medical residency. The new residency program, accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, will begin on July 1. The five-year program is approved for twenty positions.
The MHMC program is designed to give participants a greater depth and breadth of experiences by exposing them to a variety of patient populations found in Northern New Jersey. In addition to their rounds at MHMC, residents will have the opportunity to rotate through Palisades Medical Center, Englewood Hospital Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center for additional specialty training. This is the first of what will be several residency programs provided by MHMC.
“Orthopedic surgery is an exceptionally challenging and competitive specialty and we’re honored that our hospital has been selected as the training ground for new surgeons,” said Dr. Maurizio Miglietta, MHMC chief of surgery and director of medical education.
