North Bergen Police conducting Informational Checkpoint on Monroig Hit-and-Run Death

NORTH BERGEN – The North Bergen Police Department will be conducting an Informational Checkpoint tonight at the corner of Tonnelle Avenue and 51 Street in order to distribute fliers and seek information about the hit-and-run death of Omar Monroig. Monroig was struck by a vehicle on March 23, 2012, and died of the injuries he sustained days later. The checkpoint is scheduled to being at approximately 9 p.m.
North Bergen Police have continued the investigation into Monroig’s death for nearly a year. Shortly after the incident police used surveillance footage and pieces of the vehicle to determine that the car that hit Monroig was an early 2000s dark colored Toyota sedan. Police conducted an Informational Checkpoint two weeks later at the scene of the accident that resulted in a witness giving a description of the driver of the vehicle. A sketch artist composite was later created and distributed via fliers and the news media, but no significant leads were found since that time. Anyone with any information on the death of Omar Monroig should call the North Bergen Police Department at (201) 392-2100.
The Monroig family is offering a reward of $20,000 to anyone who produces useful information leading to the arrest of the driver, who is described as a white male, age 50-70, with tan or olive skin, 220-250 pounds, approximately 5’8” to 5’10”, brown hair and dark eyes, speaks with an accent, and has a noticeable mole near his mouth.
