SECAUCUS — In a story that has gotten wide media play, a 26-year-old man from Secaucus, Matthew Keys, has been charged by the federal government with conspiring to hack into Tribune media web sites.
Keys, the deputy social media editor for Reuters, is accused of giving login information used by his former employers — Tribune — to a hacker group in 2010. The group allegedly hacked into the Los Angeles Times web site to change a story.
Keys reportedly faces up to 25 years in prison.
News sources quoted his Twitter feed as saying, in reference to his indictment, “I found out the same way most of you did: From Twitter. Tonight I’m going to take a break. Tomorrow, business as usual.”
The press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office can be found here. A Twitter feed apparently belonging to Keys is here.
