FLORIO, MARY

A funeral mass was offered March 6 at Our Lady of Grace R.C. Church, Hoboken, for Mary Florio, 88, of Hoboken. She passed away March 3 at her home surrounded by her family. Mary was born on St Patrick’s Day of 1924 to Bridget O’Gara and Joseph Cahill in Hell’s Kitchen, New York City. When still a toddler, the family moved to Hoboken, which she called home for the remainder of her life. The eldest of five children, Mary’s siblings were her closet friends.
She attended Saints Peter and Paul Grammar School, and graduated from Demarest High School in 1942. Mary remained close with some of her Grammar School friends, and they had an annual reunion up until Hurricane Sandy. Soon after graduating, she worked as a secretary at Sperry Manufacturing on 14th Street in Hoboken. Following the end of WWll she was swept off her feet by Lawrence Florio, and they were married on June 29th, 1947. The couple produced three children, Patricia, Edward and Lorraine, and had 38 years of wonderful family life.
Larry became a prominent New Jersey attorney, while Mary devoted her life to raising the children and managing the home. Bowling and dancing were what they enjoyed doing most together. Mary was active in Our Lady of Grace Church, serving on everything from the Mother’s Guild while her children attended OLG School to most recently the Rosary Society.
She is survived by her sisters Ann McDonough and Joan Cahill, her children Patricia, Edward and his wife Nancy and Lorraine, and grandchildren Lawrence, Christine, Olivia and Angelica. Services arranged by the Failla Memorial Home, Hoboken.
