Former Weehawken cop who beat teen to death loses appeal
The former Weehawken police officer who in 2003 was convicted of aggravated assault after beating 17-year-old Jose Luis Ives Jr. into a coma was denied an appeal to have his conviction reconsidered this week, the Associated Press reported.
Ives Jr. succumbed to his injuries and died in a coma after the beating took place, the former officer, Alejandro Jaramillo, was acquitted of manslaughter but convicted of aggravated assault.
Witnesses said Jaramillo, who was off-duty at the time, got into a physical altercation with Ives and hit him several times in a dispute regarding Jaramillo’s car. Jaramillo was sentenced to eight years in prison on the assault count, and seven more years for filing false reports on the incident.
In the denied appeal, Jaramillo claimed his attorney failed to call a witness whose testimony could have exonerated him.
A state appeals court in Newark disagreed and ruled against Jaramillo in a decision published Thursday.

Hudson County Chamber of Commerce holding healthcare roundtable
The Hudson County Chamber of Commerce announced this week that it will host a roundtable discussion for business owners and leaders interested in learning more about new initiatives designed to rein in the rising cost of healthcare premiums for employers. The event will be held on Wed. April 17 at 8:30 a.m. at the Jersey City Museum, located at 350 Montgomery St.
The goal of the roundtable is to provide businesses an opportunity to learn more about what is driving rising healthcare costs for employers and how local healthcare facilities are working to bring down those costs. The session will be moderated by Nicholas A. Chiaravalloti, Executive Director, Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership.
The panel will feature Joseph Scott, President and CEO, LibertyHealth; Susan Walsh, M.D., Medical Director, Accountable Care Organization, Jersey City Medical Center; Ward Sanders, President, New Jersey Association of Health Plans and Assemblyman Gary Schaer, Deputy Speaker.

12-inch water main breaks on Weehawken waterfront; hotel was temporarily without water
A 12-inch water main pipe located just off the intersection of 19th street and Harbor Boulevard in Weehawken broke early Tuesday afternoon, rendering the Sheraton Hotel temporarily without fresh water but causing little other damage or inconvenience.
The pipe was fixed late that evening after a United Water crew arrived on the scene, and was restored to the hotel and a few neighboring buildings.
A United Water worker at the scene, who wished to remain anonymous, said that a construction crew would need around four or five hours to repair the pipe. In the meantime, United Water provided some emergency water to the hotel, the worker said.
North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue personnel were also on the scene to provide water in case of an emergency. Sheraton staff indicated that they were providing complimentary bottled water to all of the hotel’s guests. They said that the hotel had enough water for guests to shower.
The water was restored by the end of the day.
Christ Hospital to hold info session for potential nursing students
The Christ Hospital School of Nursing (SON) will be hosting an information session on Wed. April 24 at 5 p.m. at the Christ Hospital School of Nursing building, located at 169 Palisade Ave. in Jersey City.
In cooperation with Hudson County Community College, the SON will be offering full-time day and part-time night divisions, as well as an accelerated LPN to RN program.
