Smith, Nowak propel Penguins

It’s been a bumpy start for the (0-3) Islanders as they try to get their footing in the Jewish Community Center of Bayonne’s Floor Hockey Sr. Division. As for the (2-0) Penguins, most everything has stayed on track as they continue to rule the pack in this young season. The Islanders started the action as Gabriella Bonilla sailed in a goal off an assist from Natallyah Teixeira making it 1-0, Islanders. The narrow lead held for the next ten minutes as Meghann Mock, James Bajor, and Elliott Santana kept the Penguins high- powered offense boxed in. Needing a spark, the Penguins’ Malachi Smith roared into action by turning a tightrope pass from Jake Nowak into a game-tying goal. Knotted at 1-1 the Penguins unleashed a scoring blitz as Malachi Smith pumped in two more goals while Josh Verzosa notched his third goal of the season. Assisting on the three-goal spree were Jan Patrick Egan and Jake Nowak as the Penguins lead climbed to 4-1. As the Penguins’ offense flourished, their league-leading defense dug their heels in as goalie Matt Doyle handled a slew of point-blank shots as he frustrated the Islanders’ no-holds- barred attack. In the final minutes, the Penguins iced their victory with Jake Nowak pumping in two open-net goals as the Penguins rolled to a 6-1 victory A special mention must be given to the Penguins’ rock-solid defensemen John Bautista and Alisa Verzosa for their sure-handed stick handling which helped key the win.
