Stack endorses Gov. Christie for re-election
Union City Mayor and 33rd District State Sen. Brian Stack endorsed Gov. Chris Christie for re-election at a rally in Union City on Wednesday afternoon. Stack is a Democrat and Christie is a Republican, but Stack has worked with Christie before.
Stack is also up for re-election in November, and is favored to win in predominantly Democratic Hudson County.
Two other Democratic Hudson County mayors — Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer and West New York Mayor Felix Roque — have shown signs of being allied with Christie or working with him in the past, but neither has made an endorsement.
At the rally, Stack said, “Governor Christie has set an example of what it means to be bipartisan for the good of the people.” He spoke of Christie’s work with Pres. Barack Obama in bringing federal aid to his area for Hurricane Sandy.
Christie said, “Brian and I have covered a lot of ground in the last three years together – brining reform to Trenton and results to the people of Union City.”
Stack also called Christie a friend. “I get more sleep every night knowing I have a governor who cares about the people of New Jersey,” he said.
Christie faces Democratic challenger Barbara Buono in November.
Stack’s state Senate district includes Union City, Hoboken, Weehawken, and part of Jersey City.
Flag Retirement Program under way in three towns
The North Bergen Veterans Alliance is sponsoring its American Flag Retirement Program, which accepts used flags to be retired in a “proper, dignified manner,” according to an alliance spokesman.
Four sites, in the towns of North Bergen, Guttenberg and West New York, will accept the flags during regular business hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The sites and contacts are:
• North Bergen: 64th Street Recreation Center, 6300 Meadowview Ave., Digger O’Dell; or Department of Public Works Garage, 6100 Tonnelle Ave., Ed O’Neill;
• Guttenberg: Police Headquarters, 6808 Park Ave., Capt. Joel Magenheimer; and
• West New York: Miller Stadium, 57th Street & Bergenline Avenue, Ken Furlong.

Rebeka Verea observance on Thursday
On Thursday, June 20, at 9 a.m., West New York Mayor Felix Roque and the town’s Board of Commissioners will commemorate the life and memory of Rebeka Verea with a ceremony on Rebeka Verea Way, 56th Street and Park Avenue in West New York, in front of Memorial High School.
Verea was killed in a car accident on June 20, 2005 on West Side Avenue in North Bergen, only hours after her graduation from Cliffside Park High School.

Little Miss Schuetzen Seeking Entrants
The 47th Annual German-American Little Miss Schuetzen Park Beauty Pageant is seeking applications for this year’s contest. The pageant is open to girls ages 7 through 12 years old and who are of Germanic, part Germanic, or Swedish heritage.
The pageant will be judged in Schuetzen Park, North Bergen, on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the celebration of the annual Oktoberfest in August Folk Festival.
