$500,000 bail set for man who allegedly stabbed wife to death
A 28-year-old man was charged with murder and unlawful possession of a knife last Friday after he allegedly stabbed his wife, also 28, in their Bergen Avenue apartment around 11:30 p.m.
According to published reports, the man made his first court appearance on Tuesday morning.
Hudson County Superior Court Judge Paul DePascale continued his bail, set at $500,000 with no 10 percent cash option.
Newspaper reports said that when police arrived at the appointment Friday night, the suspect was being restrained by relatives.
The suspect had been released from prison on Sept. 8, 2012, after serving 4.5 years on drug and robbery convictions.
The killing was the latest in a string of unrelated killings in Jersey City since the last week in June, more than seven in an eight-week period.
‘Kitten Bonanza’ next weekend
Hudson County Animal League and Companion Animal Trust will host a “Kitten Bonanza” adoption weekend event on Saturday, Aug. 24 and Sunday, Aug. 25 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fussy Friends Pet Supply, 148 Newark Ave. between Grove and Erie streets in Downtown Jersey City.
The kittens, many of whom were found as a result of Trap Neuter Return projects in Jersey City and Bayonne, and whose ages range from seven to 12 weeks old, will all be vaccinated and spayed or neutered.
There will be a special reduced adoption fee of $50 per kitten and each adopter will receive a free kitten food sample.

Two local men still recovering after Route 3 car accident that killed three others
An early morning, one-car accident on Route 3 in North Bergen on Aug. 10, killed three people, including the car’s driver, and sent two others to the hospital.
The two survivors were taken to the Jersey City Medical Center for treatment, according to police, who identified them as an 18-year-old Jersey City man and a 23-year-old man from Weehawken. As of Aug. 14, the 18-year-old man was still being treated in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit. The other man was released on Aug. 11.
“At about 4 a.m., we responded to a very serious one-car motor vehicle accident on Route 3 East just before the turn on to 495 East, the main thoroughfare leading to the Lincoln Tunnel,” said Deputy Chief Gerald Sanzari in a statement on Aug. 10.
The vehicle involved in the accident was a 2008 Dodge Charger, transporting five men between the ages of 18 to 31, according to police.
Joshua Mayorga, 23, of Union City, Jammal Mann, 31, of Newark, and Tariq M. DeMoss, 22, of North Bergen were identified as the deceased by police and township spokesman Philip Swibinski.
“Four out of the five were ejected from the vehicle,” Sanzari said. “One of the occupants was found about 10 feet from the crash, several feet above the ground in a wooded area. The driver was killed as a result of this accident. He was the only occupant who was not ejected. He was wearing his seat belt.”
The deputy chief said that the two surviving occupants had been sitting in the back seat.
A police statement said that investigators are seeking to determine whether alcohol, drugs, and/or speeding were factors, “However, this cannot be determined at this time, until toxicology reports are received,” Sanzari said.
“They’re [North Bergen police] still investigating, along with the Hudson County Police and Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office,” Swibinski said on Aug. 12. Police were still awaiting the toxicology reports, he said.
