JERSEY CITY – Hudson County Acting Prosecutor Gaetano T. Gregory announced in a press release late Wednesday that the Homicide Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 66-year-old man found in his Corbin Avenue apartment in Jersey City on Tuesday afternoon.
On Oct. 8, 2013, at approximately 3:35 p.m., the Jersey City Fire Department Responded to 55 Corbin Ave. in Jersey City to check on the well-being of a resident in one of the apartments and to investigate a foul odor.
The Fire Department made a forced entry into the apartment and discovered the unidentified deceased man in the bedroom. The man was found with clothing piled on top him and hardened cement on top of the clothing and body. The victim appeared to be in a stage of decomposition, according to the statement released by Gregory.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical examiner.
A preliminary investigation has revealed that the victim was the resident of the apartment and lived there alone; however, investigators believe a relative may have been staying with him recently.
While the death is considered suspicious at this time, it has not yet been officially ruled a homicide.
A police investigation continues and Gregory’s office is awaiting results from the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
The name of the male is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
