Volunteers sought for church’s Thanksgiving luncheon
Opening your heart on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, for those less fortunate is easier than ever this year if you can volunteer a couple hours time at the Woodcliff Community Reformed Church, 7605 Palisade Ave., in North Bergen.
“We are looking for volunteers to arrive at the church at 9 a.m.,” said Angela Evertz, event organizer. “Lunch will be served noon for those looking for a traditional Thanksgiving meal. This shows unity in the community on Thanksgiving Day.”
“Me and my wife Angela started this event five years ago,” said Efrain Evertz, “seeing a need in the community on Thanksgiving Day for a warm meal, or a place to find someone to have lunch with on this special day of thanks.
“Seniors and homeless folks have seemed to be the majority part of the community that comes to have lunch. And to enjoy the fellowship,” said Efrain, the operating manager of the Community Food Pantry at Woodcliff.

Freeholders laud High Tech High for Jersey CAN Award
The Hudson County Board of Freeholders recently recognized High Tech High School for receiving the Jersey CAN Award for Academic Excellence for 2013. It was one of just a few schools in the state to be honored.
High Tech is located in North Bergen, but accepts students who apply from all of Hudson County.
“Jersey CAN’s Top 10 schools detail the performance of every public school and district in the state,” a spokesman said. High Tech received the honor based on its success in the categories of Low-Income Student Performance, Latino Student Performance, and Overall Student Performance.
“The Hudson County Board of Freeholders commends the students, staff, and faculty members for their hard work in attaining this prestigious award,” said Freeholder Chairman Anthony Romano.
“Here in New Jersey, we are proud to host some of the best schools in the country,” said Janellen Duffy, Jersey CAN executive director.
Diabetes program offered by library
A program about the symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of type 2 diabetes will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, at the North Bergen Free Public Library, 8411 Bergenline Ave.
Internal medicine specialist Gilberto Gastell, M.D., will be discussing the disease.
This event is sponsored by the Hispanic Outreach Program and Holy Name Medical Center for Wellness Wednesdays.

Sign ups ongoing for recreation holiday party
Registration is already under way for the North Bergen Department of Recreation’s holiday party for children. Infants to children age 9 are eligible to attend.
The party will feature entertainment, refreshments, and gifts for all registered children.
The items needed to register are birth certificate, proof of residence, and last report card copy.
Children must have a ticket to attend. One adult per family can receive a ticket to attend.
Interested parties can register at the Recreation Center. The date and location of the party are to be determined.

Kennedy Branch announces English for Beginners class
The Kennedy Branch will be offering a 10-week English for Beginners course beginning on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m.

Child advocate group holding informational session
Are you interested in helping children in the foster care system? If so, Hudson County CASA (court appointed special advocate) is recruiting volunteers to advance the best interests of abused and neglected children.
An informational session, addressing the program and the role of its volunteers, will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 400 of the Hudson County Administration Building, 595 Newark Ave., Jersey City.

Hudson Learning Center seeking voters
The Hudson Learning Center, a local education and tutoring center, has applied for a $250,000 grant from Chase as part of a newly launched program, Mission Main Street Grants, and is seeking your helping in getting it.
The center must receive at least 250 votes to be eligible for the monies.

Fish and chips benefit Nov. 12 at Grove Reformed Church
Grove Reformed Church will hold its annual Fish and Chips Dinner on Nov. 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 46th Street and Kennedy Blvd.
Tickets are $14 for adults and $7 for children under 9 years old.

Park Players ‘Wizard of Oz’ production continues weekend of Nov. 15-17
“Go off to see the Wizard, the wonderful ‘Wizard of Oz.’ ” At the Church of the Good Shepherd, 1576 Palisade Ave., Fort Lee, that is.
That’s where The Park Players, formerly of The Park Theatre in Union City and Weehawken,
are staging “The Wizard of Oz,” on Nov. 15, and 16 at 8 p.m. and Nov. 17 at 5 p.m.
The performance includes residents and former residents of North Bergen, Guttenberg, and Union City.
Ticket prices are $16, $14 (students/seniors), and $12 (groups of 10 or more).

Palisades Medical Center holding community health screening
Palisades Medical Center in North Bergen provides free health screenings and education programs.
The next of these events is Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Woodcliff Community Reformed Church, 7605 Palisade Ave., North Bergen.
There will be free screenings and information on: blood pressure, heart rate, percentage of oxygen in the blood, peak flow/respiratory, body mass index, sugar, and cholesterol.
