Bears “D” keys win

In a battle for the top spot in the JCC of Bayonne’s Indoor flag football Jr. Division, the (6-2) Bears and the (5-3) Colts took to the court. The Bears got on the board first with a 20 yard TD toss from Matt Miceli to Nicholas Resua. Moments later, the Colts took an 8-6 lead as Ahmad McGill dashed full court and Kasper Hooks snared a two point catch. After a tough defensive stand led by Michael Aziz, Kyle Arano, and Chris Ballance, the Colts’ offense stretched their lead to 14-6 on a 35 yard TD gallop by Ahmad McGill. The Bears inched closer as Nicholas Resua’s 10 yard TD sprint made it 14-12, Colts. It took just one play for the Colts to make it 20-12 with another court torching run by their burner Ahmad McGill. The Bears showed off some speed of their own as Matt Miceli dashed long distance for a TD followed by Miceli’s two point run to knot the game at 20 all. With the Colts knocking on the door, the Bears’ defense stepped up as Resua picked off a pass to end the Colts’ scoring threat. At the start of the second half, the Bears’ “D” came up big again as Jordan Neustein, Anthony Fraser, and Michael Egan helped to force a two point safety. Trailing 22-20 the Colts Ahmad McGill was soon off to the races as McGill’s forth TD trip made it 26-22, Colts. With the two minute warning approaching the Bears went to a ground and pound attack as Ryan Griffin’s 25 yard TD rumble gave the Bears a 28-26 advantage. Staying true to their winning formula, the Colt’s worked the ball to their playmaker, Ahmad McGill who notched his fifth TD of the bout making it 32 – 28, Colts with under a minute remaining. In the final minute, the Bears’ defense hunkered down once more as Ryan Griffin pilfered a Colts’ pass at midcourt. Griffin then cashed in as his 20 yard TD drive made it 34-32, Bears. The Colts had one last shot to pull out a victory but once again the Bears; defense made a stand as Matt Miceli’s interception nailed down the Bears’ 34-32 victory.
