JERSEY CITY – The new mayor of Jersey City is curious about two safes that were found inside a vault in the mayor’s office after he took office this past May.
Believed to have been locked for more than 40 years, the safes hark back to the days when corruption was said to be rampant in this second largest city in New Jersey.
So what’s inside the safes, if anything?
This coming Tuesday at high noon, the mayor is going to find out.
He has hired a professional safe company to open the two Mosler Safes.
“They are quite old,” Fulop said, “and we thought it would be interesting to find out what may be inside. Jersey City’s storied political history makes you wonder why safes were ever installed in the Mayor’s Office in the first place.”
A spokesman said they may have been installed during the administration of Frank “I Am the Law” Hague.
While no one is certain exactly what the safes were used for or when they were last opened, they are not believed to have been opened in more than 40 years.
Sounds like an episode of Storage Wars.
So…what’s inside? Money? The body of a famous former Teamster?
Watch this space on Tuesday afternoon to find out. Or come to City Hall, 280 Grove St., Jersey City, and see for yourself.
