JERSEY CITY – Mayor Steven M. Fulop will be hosting two White House Cabinet members next week as Labor Secretary Thomas Perez and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius are scheduled to speak at two different events.
Secretary Perez will be in Jersey City to participate in a round table discussion at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 3 at PACO, 398 Manila Avenue, with city officials and local and state labor leaders regarding the city’s recently enacted Earned Sick Leave legislation and New Jersey’s recent referendum to raise the minimum wage.
In October, Mayor Fulop signed into law the City’s Earned Sick Leave ordinance, making Jersey City the first city in the State of New Jersey to enact such legislation and the sixth city to do so nationally.
Secretary Sebelius will be hold a press conference at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at City Hall Council Chambers to discuss Jersey City’s successful efforts at enrolling residents in the Affordable Care Act.
Jersey City had an aggressive role out plan and implementation of the Affordable Care Act, hosting a bilingual navigator and ten staff members who were trained as certified application counselors. Jersey City Health and Human Services also worked in coordination with ten other local agencies that serve certain populations such as veterans and ethnic groups.
“These visits illustrate all of the great things we are doing to move Jersey City forward and we are honored to be recognized by the White House,” said Mayor Fulop. “Having a strong working relationship with the Obama administration will greatly benefit the City and our residents.”
This is the third cabinet secretary to visit Jersey City in a little over a month, as Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx visited Jersey City in late December.
