BAYONNE – A worker at the Bayonne Dry Dock fell from scaffolding and plunged two stories, severely injuring his ankle before being rescued by Bayonne firefighters in a 40-minute operation on Wednesday, March 5, a fire official said.
At 9:50 a.m., the fire department responded to the dry dock at the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor, according to Fire Chief Gregory Rogers.
“Arriving firefighters discovered that one male worker had fallen approximately two stories from scaffolding while working on the stern of a ship that was undergoing repairs within the dry dock,” Rogers said.
Firefighters entered the dry dock pit and provided medical attention to the victim, who apparently suffered a severe injury to his left ankle, according to Rogers. He was stabilized and secured to a gurney.
A large rail crane, operated by dry dock personnel, was outfitted with a large basket, and firefighters transferred the victim to the basket and he and they were hoisted out of the dry dock.
Emergency medical services personnel also treated the victim, and he was reportedly transported to the Jersey City Medical Center. – Joseph Passantino
