A funeral mass was held Feb. 27 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, Jersey City, for Katherine Kaliades. She passed away Feb. 24 at Jersey City Medical Center. A lifelong Jersey City resident, she was the daughter of John and Anastasia Paskalides. She is survived by her children, Demetria (Emilio) and Paul (Jude), grandchildren Katherine (David), Emilio (Alicia), Alexis, Stephanie (Jordan), Charles and great-grandchildren Marco, Luciano and Lucia. Katherine was predeceased by her husband Charles in 1991.
She was an active member of The Philoptochos Ladies Auxiliary, choir director and steward of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Jersey City, award-winning educator, homemaker, translator, and world traveler. After raising her two children, she pursued her lifelong dream of becoming an educator by earning her bachelor’s degree in 1969 and a Master’s Degree in 1972 from Jersey City State College. A woman of unending energy and stamina, she worked in Jersey City’s public school system until her retirement at the age of 87. Until her final days she sustained her industrious spirit and support of her family through hand-sewn crafts, cooking, cleaning and grocery shopping.
