Speed bumps at our schools

To the Editor,

When I was a child going to Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, I saw one of the most horrific sights ever.
Another child, who was younger than me, ran across the street and was hit by an oncoming car. It was a taxicab that hit him so hard he flew about 20 feet in the air. Amazingly, he survived, but I can still remember the sight and sound of him being struck by that taxicab and his distraught sister, who was my classmate at the time, as if it happened yesterday.
That was more than 30 years ago and there is still no speed bump there or at many of the schools in Bayonne.
According to my research, it would cost approximately $400,000 to install speed bumps and signs at all of the schools in Bayonne. With all of the wasteful spending in our municipal government, I’m sure we can find the money there without raising taxes.
It’s about time that the mayor looks out for the safety of our children rather than his special interests. Let’s urge the mayor to do so.
