Dear Editor:
As an educator, nothing is more rewarding than to watch your students, young adults, work to inspire and benefit those around them. I am a teacher and the National Junior Honor Society adviser at PS#27 in Jersey City. A colleague of mine has a niece with Cystic Fibrosis. Over the past two years
the family has shared this beautiful young girl’s story and have raised Cystic Fibrosis awareness in our school. The National Junior Honor Society decided to host a school-wide coin drive, Coins for a Cure for Cystic Fibrosis, with the goal of raising $2,000 to help fund research. The stories of the students’ selfless acts have truly humbled me, and in just four weeks we have raised $5,000. The students committed themselves to this cause and to help a peer, some donating birthday money received as gifts, others money earned from shoveling snow. Many teachers have found themselves inspired by
the efforts of our students and have matched the donations of their class totals!
It is amazing the effect good deeds have on others, and none of this would have been possible without the support of the teachers and administrators, and of course the hard work and commitment from our incredible students.
Sincerely,
Karen McGinn
